My journey started during the harsh winter of 2015, I was just dismissed from college and I felt trapped. However, that was just one new obstacle in my path. With no home, no job, and the pressures of college weighing on my mind, I was completely alone, fighting a battle without the proper equipment. Eventually, I was introduced to Green City Force, an AmeriCorps program that hires residents of the NYC Housing Authority, and was given a second chance to finally fix my broken life. So I began taking the steps toward becoming an AmeriCorps member. It has been 1 year since I finished my service year. I have met a number of phenomenal people and saw many places around the city along the way. I managed to find piece of mind and service many communities during my term. I also gained new opportunities along the way.
As my AmeriCorps term was ending, I was offered a position with BlocPower to become a part of their Business Development team where I help implement the Community Retrofit NYC program. My new chapter began in January 2017, I went from educating residents of public housing to now engaging building owners and property managers about energy efficiency. I plan to continue to grow and pursue a degree in Architecture, along with many green certifications so that I can fulfill my dream of becoming a Green Architect.
